Electrical

Our range of electrical work is comprehensive and covers domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural.

Domestic

Electricity in the home is something that we tend to take for granted. We flick a switch and a light comes on and we do not give a thought to how it happened. Usually the distribution board, cables, sockets, lights and switches were installed by a reputable electrician when the house was built and it can go on for years without any problems. There are very few problems with modern houses, but older houses often need some attention. Over the years safety standards have become more stringent and the NICEIC recommend a periodic test and inspection every ten years to make sure everything is still in order, complies to regulations and more importantly, safe. Throughout the life of a house the electrical installation can deteriorate, old rubber cables become brittle and dangerous and have to be replaced, vermin attack cables in the loft space and the DIY enthusiasts and “cowboys” make alterations which do not comply with current regulations.

When you see the NICEIC Domestic Installer logo you know that the electrical work is up to standard and where it is required you will be issued with a certificate for the work carried out.

Some customers call on us to find faults in the home, add more sockets and lights or make electrical repairs. However, our scope of work is not limited to existing houses. Alan Manchip Electrical Contractors can work with your architect or direct for the client to carry out the electrical work for new build houses and extensions to existing houses. If you want an extra socket in the kitchen or a whole new house, we have the qualifications and the expertise to carry out the work.

Commercial

Electricity is a vital part of commerce today and most commercial enterprises require an electrician at some stage. Even a gardener who sells his produce will probably do his accounts on a computer which needs an electrical supply. In this modern technological world most businesses are connected to the World Wide Web and the Internet and we are able to install telephone cables, data cables as well as the main electrical installation.

We do work for a huge range of commercial enterprises and we recognise that an electrical problem for a commercial customer will probably mean loss of revenue so we give them priority when there is a breakdown. Shops and offices tend to work normal business hours but there are other businesses which operate in the evenings and at weekends like restaurants, pubs and night clubs so we offer an emergency call out service to enable them to keep operating.

Where the public is involved the NICEIC regulations are more stringent than in the home so inspecting and testing in commercial properties is carried out at more frequent intervals. Also the Local Authorities require certain businesses to have a Portable Appliance Test (PAT) carried out annually and we send a reminder to our customers when this test is due so that they never fall foul of the inspectors.

Nurseries and soft fruit producers need refrigeration for their crops. Farmers work 24/7 and they need power 24/7 so we give them priority when there is a breakdown and we also give a 24 hour emergency call out service.

Periodic inspections

A periodic test and inspection is a report detailing the condition of the electrical installation. It does not include light bulbs, fluorescent fittings, passive infra red sensors or equipment vulnerable to insulation resistance testing. If any faults are found during the periodic test and inspection they are reported in detail to the client similar to an MOT on a car.

The faults will be coded from 1-4 according to safety issues, compliance with regulations and items which are recommended but not essential. The customer can then decide how much remedial work they wish to have carried out as a result of the periodic test and inspection. Any remedial work is classed as a separate job and will not be commenced without the client’s instruction.

The local authorities require certain business to carry out a Periodic Test and Inspection to comply with Health and Safety regulations and Landlord Certificates.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

The local authorities require certain businesses to carry out an In Service Inspection and Test (or Portable Appliance Test) (PAT) to comply with Health and Safety regulations

An annual Portable Appliance Test is carried out on all electrical appliances used in connection with the business, which have a plug top and are plugged into an electrical socket. Some appliances are genuinely portable like kettles, toasters, hair dryers etc but some appliances are fixed like refrigerators and large photocopiers etc but they still come into the category of portable appliance for the purpose of the Portable Appliance Test..

A sticker is put onto the appliance to show either that it has passed or been rejected, the person who did the test and the date it was tested
